Does Appearance Matter?

Despite the saying that "Beauty is only skin deep", we still cannot deny that our appearance does play a big part not only in our self esteem, but also in how others perceive us. I should know, I used to have very bad acne while I was training as a medical clerk more than 10 years ago. My self esteem was at an all time low and I believed my superiors think that I am not washing my face enough (which I did -- I washed too often, actually, hoping that the microbes would be washed off my skin and my pimples would clear up). Mine turned out to be a hormonal problem aggravated by stress. A three month regimen of a certain brand oral contraceptive pills cleared up my problem. Thankfully, it didn't come back anymore after that. I regretted that I did not have the root of the problem investigated at once. I could have saved myself the agony and the inevitable scars -- both the physical acne scars and the emotional scars from thinking that I was ugly.

My point in this rambling piece is that, yes, you do need to invest in your appearance. I do not really mean that you have to undergo drastic plastic surgery. I mean that you should take care of how you look. Get your pimples treated properly. Get a good haircut that looks right for you. Pick the right clothes. All these will make you feel more beautiful -- and it reflects in how you shine.
