Don't Look A Gift Horse In The Mouth

The holiday gift giving spree is over and we're now left with gifts. Some are great, and some are not so great, but the best way to be happy about those gifts is to appreciate everything.

I've often read about NOT giving certain gifts because the recipient might be offended...but if you happen to be the recipient, it's best to just appreciate everything. For example, if you were given a dozen soaps, just think that these are practical gifts, would save you some money and effort in buying those soaps AND do not think that the giver is out to give you a secret message that you stink and must take a bath more often! Or if you were given something like Lipovox, think that the recipient just wants you to take care of yourself and is not secretly thinking that you are too fat!

You'd feel better if you just appreciate the things that are given to you than just criticize people for choosing gifts which don't appear in your wish list.

Breastfeeding Makes You Lose Weight!

During my first pregnancy, I gained a total of 30 pounds during my entire pregnancy. I actually lost the majority (about 20 pounds) of those extra poundage as soon as I gave birth. The remaining 10 pounds were lost after about 3 months without me resorting to any diet, exercise or even any weight loss product! In fact I was eating more than I did when I was pregnant since I was constantly hungry. My secret? Breastfeeding! I did exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months then started added solids after that. After my baby turned 1 we also supplemented with soy milk (since he was allergic to cow's milk -- thank goodness he eventually outgrew it) and kept breastfeeding till 1 year 10 months. Not only is breastfeeding healthy, it also is economical...with benefits for mommy too!

I'm Not A Wine Expert, So....

While I do enjoy an occasional glass of wine (but not with my present condition), I am far from being an expert on wines. Last Christmas season, there were people that I wanted to gift with wines because I knew they are wine connoisseurs (they are probably members of some wine of the month club), but I was afraid that the wines I would give would be of inferior quality (and worse, be expensive despite the quality). So I ended up giving them something else entirely.

It's just my personal opinion, but I'd rather not give something I do not know much about as a gift to someone who knows more about it. :)

While it's the usual hot, tropical weather here in the Philippines, in other parts of the world, it's actually freezing cold. It's a good thing some stalls actually sell winter stuff (which we actually don't use over here) like scarves, beanies, thermal underwear and winter coats. If you've decided to vacation in some snowy part of the world, probably indulging in winter delights like skiing, better go prepared because you definitely do not want to risk health problems from the cold (especially since we come from a year-round warm climate).

If, however, you've decided to immigrate and your date of departure is at a warmer time of the year, don't lug along heavy winter wear and just reserve the extra poundage for more important (and maybe sentimental stuff?). You can buy your winter clothes there when the season calls for it.

Turn Off The Taps Carefully

This is very basic, something taught to us even back in kindergarten, but some people still forget.

Do remember to turn off your faucet so that no water drips out. The 1 drip-drip-drip from your faucet (even elegant and quality ones like Moen faucets) would eventually translate into gallons of clean, potable water wasted after a few hours. Knowing how difficult it is to process water into something clean and drinkable, this negligence is more than just a waste of money.
