My brother

My youngest brother just turned another year older. I guess it's because he's the bunso (youngest), he's just a little bit more unstructured unlike the rest of us older siblings. He doesn't really feel it, but both the eldest (me) and the oldest boy (my brother who was born between me and the birthday celebrant) feel that my parents were a bit looser with him than they were with us. I guess it's the way with all families.

I don't know if that's also the reason why his hair is still as full as it was when we were kids. Sometimes it's so full it's quite unmanageable and he's a bit inis (annoyed) about it. On the flip side, though, he doesn't have to worry about hair loss and having to look for a natural cure for hair loss. Genetics may also play a role as our dad had thick hair until he lost it to chemotherapy. :(

No to smoking

While there are cases of asbestos cancer affecting the lungs, the more common cause of lung cancer especially here in the Philippines is still smoking. And not only for the smoker himself/herself, but also for the people he/she loves and lives with. Second hand smoking also causes cancer. Pregnant women who smoke also cause problems in their unborn baby's growth and development.

Hence, it is best NOT to pick up the habit. And if you're already smoking, to stop the habit.

Stay positive!

In about a month's time I will be celebrating the big 4-0. While I am starting to browse through anti aging and prevera reviews, I am quite confident that I do not really look old. I guess part of it is genetics. My mom is in her 60's but she could still pass for early fifties or even late forties. And, having young kids (mine's aged 4 years old and 10 months old) does keep one young.

But don't get me wrong. The past decade has been a whole series of stress. Or perhaps that's what being an adult is -- getting life's challenges and trying to rise up to them, trying to keep sane regardless.

Just remember, just do your best in every situation, keep your outlook as positive as possible. All things -- whether good or bad-- do come to an end.

Life's too short to waste on always being negative.

Wedding and marriage

I think I'm still a wedding planning junkie, even after 5 years of being married. No, not enough to be a wedding planner, but enough to want to check out other people's weddings. I still love looking at how they gradually add elements -- themes, motiffs, ceremony venue, reception venue, bridal attire, wedding accessories and all the other elements to make a wedding their very own.

I've enjoyed the process of planning my wedding, and although my own wedding had its share of glitches, I'm happy with the way things went and I've held fond memories of the day when my husband and I vowed to share our lives together from then on.

The most important thing to remember is that it's all about marrying the person you love. All the other things are secondary. So no matter what your budget, no matter how many guest you have, the most important thing is that you're now going to be husband and wife.

When it comes down to it, I'd have married my husband even with less of the pomp and the glamor, although having all the extra touches (all within budget, of course!) and all the guests to witness our coming together certainly added an extra oomph.

So don't worry too much about having no or little of the "essentials" that are really extra. What's really essential is the two of you becoming one.

No vacation for us yet

There's a couple of threads in one of my mailing lists where a mom was asking if she should bring her child to her vacation. Most of the respondents say "yes, go for it!".

I guess it would depend on the people concerned but personally, I would not want to go out of town with the kids yet. I have a lot of concerns that other people may not understand. So for me, Branson vacation packages, tempting as they may be, would probably have to wait until things become more stable for us.

But, hey, that's just us. We're just not comfortable with traveling with the kids in our present situation (sorry can't elaborate any further). But if circumstances were different, we'd definitely want to go out on a vacation and break the routine of work, work and work.

Exercise

I used to have a membership at Fitness First, which I canceled as soon as I found out that I was pregnant with my eldest kid. I did think that I might get back to the gym later to lost the post pregnancy fat, but I never did. Fact is, I was not consistently hitting the gym even before. After giving birth, I simply did not have the time and the inclination anymore.

I actually considered home gyms. But my father had one, and I hardly ever used it.

I guess it's about commitment. It doesn't matter what you do, if your heart is not in it, you won't be able to sustain it for a long time.

I just have to find a sport activity that would keep me interested enough to want to do it regularly.

Supplements -- My Take

In my practice, I've always been asked by patients about what the best supplements are. My standard answer used to be that you should eat a balanced diet and most of your vitamins and minerals should come from your food and not from supplements.

I still think that should be the case. But I have to admit that nowadays, we can't be sure about the nutritional content of our food, and even if we were, most of us don't get the right balance of nutrients as we all have our own food preferences and dislikes. Also, even if we try our best to have a balanced diet, our lifestyle, budget and activities sometimes don't afford us the luxury of eating only healthful foods. Which should not be the case, but there it is. Oh, and some people do suffer from deficiencies because of all those factors.

That's why I think there is a place for such supplements, although I do not think that there is a supplement that is a one-size-fits-all for everybody. Do check on what you really need and add that to your supplement. But do still remember that majority of the important nutrients should also come from your food.

Weight Loss Site

If you're need to lose some weight, trying browsing this website: http://www.weightlosswand.com. I initially thought that this website was only a review of some gadget or some weight loss supplements. It actually contains other tips for losing weight, including tips on what to eat, how to eat etc.

Even if you're not interested in any of the products featured, browsing through the tips would remind you of what you need to do to lose weight and stay healthy.

Detox Check

People nowadays are becoming more health conscious. That's why many are turning more to so called organic and natural foods and eschewing processed foods. Many are also turning to detoxification to cleanse their systems of accumulated toxins.

Because of these, a lot of companies have jumped on the bandwagon in offering products that are supposed to be for better health. But as with everything else, do practice caution in picking the right product for you, check out the colonix reviews to see what others are saying about the so-called colon cleansing products, before you actually go out and buy.

A Career In Beauty

People always say that if you do something you really, really love, it won't feel like work at all. Which is what I feel (most of the time, if I'm not rushing a deadline) with writing and with seeing and treating patients (most of the time too! :) ).

Now, I'm not really a vain person, but I do get a haircut once in a while, professional makeup services if needed, and a pedicure whenever I feel like it. But many people are really into those things and just can't live without a professional salon service once in a while.

If you're one of those people, maybe a career in beauty is for you. I've come across a
cosmetology school in Minnesota which offers a dedicated Career Services Team, bringing experts to teach and to demonstrate their techniques. They even have a nationwide job search for cosmetology graduates!

With so many people willing to spend to look good, this is a good career opportunity, especially if you want to go abroad, because this is a skill that you can bring anywhere.

I love internet!

I love, love, love the internet. It has progressed so much that you can actually do a lot of stuff without leaving your home. You can pay bills online, shop and buy stuff, order business cards through online printing, keep in touch with family and friends, do research, even earn money! My wedding was planned online!

Of course, that should not make us hermits, but we can now do a lot of things that we want to do with a lot less hassle and a lot more efficiency.

The internet is certainly tops for practicality!

Machines in Medicine

While the most important factor for health care is still the human factor, a.k.a. the doctors and other medical practitioners, technology does help...a lot. That's more so for my field, Ophthalmology, where a typical doctor's clinic would at least consist of a slit lamp and an ophthalmoscope. We now have phaco machines and microscopes. I am interested in what ophthalmologists during the time of Dr. Jose Rizal did in order to diagnose and treat eye disorders.

For acne therapy, I just came across blue light therapy. I do not know if it is already available locally, but I guess I'm a bit too late for that. If this were available, say, 20 years ago, I might have tried it. But, well, I guess it's just really not for me.

TV

My brother-in-law was telling me that there's some buzz going around that the old style analog TVs would be phased out in a few years' time. I do not know how true it is. But if that is the case, it may not be a good idea to buy the analog TVs nowadays, even if they are cheaper.

Me, I'm planning to buy a new TV only if the ones I have break down. I have no use for a new TV at the moment. But if I do, I will buy a slim LCD TV which will not only save me space but will also be usable for more years, if what my BIL says is true.
