I hope I never get to use SSS disability benefits (similar to Medicare part D plan in the US, I believe), because that would mean that I got horribly injured enough to use a function of my body, but I am so glad that it's there. Because you never know what might happen to you in the future and it's nice to know that you have some sort of backup.
That's what's good about SSS. It has sickness benefits, maternity benefits, disability benefits and retirement benefits. So far, I've used some of my maternity benefits and it has helped.
I just wish that it is not so difficult to get benefits from SSS. I didn't really have a difficult time with my maternity benefit because I knew someone who knew someone inside SSS so I was properly guided throughout the entire process. Otherwise I would have been quite lost.
Anyway, if you are employed or self employed but voluntarily contributing, it would be nice to check on your status once a while, to make sure that you are up to date with your payments and that you are entitled to your benefits. Here's their website: http://sss.gov.ph
